We came across this sister's page this spring and were so excited to listen to her soothing and rhythmic sound! We also discovered that she is a Jersey native! Therefore, we just had to get to know her. Check out Elewa's first SUM Music interview below.

Where do you feel is your inspiration for music has stemmed from?
Music has always been a calling for me. Music is heavily a part of my family. I come from a family of various DJ’s, MC’s, producers, and musicians. Being from Jersey, house music is also deeply apart of my upbringing. I was surrounded by many different cultures and genres of music growing up. Therefore, I’m inspired by many forms of music. My musical ear is quite vast.
How often do you feel inspired to create art?
My home base is poetry, so I’m always writing. However, as far as music, the creative juices come in waves and I allow myself to flow with the currents. When I’m not in the space to create music, I don’t force it. Then sometimes I’m in the space to strictly produce and make beats only. Words can be overstimulating when I and myself in those spaces so I allow myself to just feel the music.
When I don’t have the energy to create and need to refuel, I focus on being more present in my daily life.
I literally follow my spirit with everything I do especially music. I let it call me because it always does.
Have you ever been in a situation where you were very vulnerable and someone took advantage of that power?
As far as my art, I’ve always discerned what to share and who to share it with because I am very protective and sensitive about my art. My music was always my outlet. Therefore, it’s always been my personal diary. So it’s always been easy for me to be more guarded with my music.
As far as personal interactions, I’ve definitely dealt with this. This is an area of my life that required a lot of healing, especially for my childhood wounds. It’s hard trusting after your vulnerability gets betrayed and mishandled.
